Rhone was amused.

We did not talk much throughout dinner. He sat on one end of the long table, I on the other. Candles spaced throughout the room hid the servants that lined the walls in shadows. They appeared only when I or Rhone gestured at a dish out of our reach so that they could serve us.

Though we did not talk, multiple times throughout the night Rhone would inexplicably break out in a short bout of laughter, before quickly smothering the sound with a draught from his goblet or a mouthful of meat.

Finally, after his most recent loss of decorum, I placed my utensils down and dabbed at my lips with my napkin. “Is something amusing you?”

“Hmm?” He looked up from his meal and shook his head. “Forgive me, Yvena. It is just that your unique brand of punishment is not one I have come across before.”

“There is a difference between punishing somebody and teaching them a lesson.”

“Whatever it may be, I am sure I will be receiving many complaints from my subjects tomorrow.”

I reached for my goblet and swirled the rich wine around, watching as it splashed against the side of the cup. “It is really none of their concern.”

“Oh, I did not say I would mind. How long do you intend to punish—” He broke off at my look. “Teach them. How long do you intend to teach them this lesson for?”

“Until I have finished the lesson Lady Treyal wished to teach me.” I took a sip of the spiced wine and placed it back on the table.

“You must be careful with her, Yvena. She is Molud’s wife.”

“I am aware.”

Rhone waved a hand, dismissing the servants. Once they were gone, he leaned forward. “Yvena, listen to me. He may seem like a harmless man, but—”

“He does not seem anything of the sort. Once I am finished with Treyal, I shall move onto Molud.”

He clenched his jaw. “I have no issue with how you deal with the noble ladies, but it is not a Queen’s place to interfere in politics.”

“If you wanted a Queen who would spend her days on her needlework and reading poetry, then you should have kidnapped a different bride. I enjoy both of those activities, of course, but I do not limit myself to them.”

Rhone sat back in his seat with an aggravated sigh. He was silent for several moments, then he drained his goblet and stood, coming to my side of the table. He knelt beside my seat. “Yvena.”

I turned my head to him. “Rhone.”

“Do not forget your place here,” he said softly, tracing my cheekbone with a finger. “You are not here as a Queen, but a bargaining chip.”

I pulled his hand from my face and ran my thumb over his fingers. “And if I involve myself in politics, will you begin threatening to cut off my fingers again?”

His smile was dangerous as he flipped our hands so now it was him tracing my fingers. “Which one of these are you most fond of?”

I considered my hand for several moments.
